Halloween is just around the corner, and if you have kids, chances are it has been the topic of discussion for many weeks. While getting ready to celebrate the spookiest time of the year, it is also important to make sure that you know how to safely enjoy the holiday. Keep these Halloween safety tips to help make the most out of the season.
When carving pumpkins
- Do not let small children carve their own pumpkins. Instead, have them draw on their design and cut it out yourself.
- Consider decorating your pumpkin in a unique way instead of carving it. Use glitter, stickers, or markers to create your own jack o lantern.
- Instead of using a candle to light up your pumpkin, use a flameless candle or glow stick to help prevent a fire.
When choosing the right costume
- Look for a brightly colored costume that is made of flame-retardant material to help keep your child visible and safe.
- Pick a costume that fits properly, or make any necessary alterations to help prevent your child from tripping and falling.
- Instead of using a mask to complete your child’s costume, use face paint or makeup. Masks can easily block kids’ vision, making it much harder to walk around.
While out trick or treating
- Plan out your trick or treating route before you hit the streets through neighborhoods that have sidewalks and plenty of street lights.
- Before you let your children enjoy any of the candy that they collected, inspect each piece and throw away and candy that is open or looks like it has been tampered with.
- If your older children will be trick or treating on their own, make sure that they have a curfew so that they make it home at a safe time.
